Flower of the Month.... Carnations

Celebrate the New Year with the flower heralded as the official birth month flower for January, the Carnation. Sadly, because of their familiarity, carnations get a bad rap. How many times a day do we hear " I don't like Carnations." However Carnations are one of the longest lasting flowers available. They come in many many colors as well as variegated or two-toned colors. They also are one of the only flowers that still has a strong scent even after all the cross breeding that is done in the flower world! They have a pleasant " clove " smell which is sweet. In fact, they were called “clove pinks” because their original color was a pinkish purple. Now days they naturally come in every color of the rainbow with the exception of blue. Additionally, white carnations have long been used to symbolize good luck. With a new year, who doesn’t need a little “good luck?” Oh, did I mention they are inexpensive. So Turn over a new leaf for 2012 and show the Carnation some love.

Carnations have been a flower staple for more than 2,000 years. The Greeks and Romans used them to decorate their homes. Today, carnations are the third top-selling flower in the United States behind roses and chrysanthemums. They look lovely arranged with other types of flowers such as Alstromeria, Iris, Snapdragons, Gerbers, Roses, Lilies, Sunflowers, Asters, Etc... When arranging them a cool trick is to gather three or four together and tie the stems. Then place them in a mixed arrangement with other full flowers. This gives them a fuller look and also strengthens the stems. Arrange several bundles in the vase adding your foliage of choice or simply the flowers for a more contemporary look. Another very chic look for carnations is to bundle six or seven Carnations together and use them as a mound at the top of a shorter stocky container. Use your favorite color but stick to just one color of Carnation. These make very modern centerpieces and are incredibly easy and inexpensive to create.

When selecting carnations, choose those with clear strong color and firm petals that show no browning or rolling of the edges. Stems and leaves should be firm and a lovely gray green color and free of discoloration and lesions. Re-cut the stem with a sharp knife, removing any leaves below the water level. Place in a cool area in a clean vase or bucket with at least 3- 4-inches of water to which an accurately measured amount of flower food has been added until ready to use. To further lengthen their vase life, re-cut the stems and change the water ever four to five days. Keep them cool and out of direct sun and drafts. Also be aware, carnations are sensitive to ethylene gas, which is produced by maturing fruit and vegetables. Carnations properly maintained can last three or more weeks. What a bargain!

Additionally, Carnations are also an edible flower. The petals have been used since the 1600s to make a French liqueur known as Chartreuse. Petals can be steeped in wine, used “candied” or as decorations on cakes and desserts. The miniature Dianthus petals taste like nutmeg and clove making them a tasty addition to salads adding spice and color. If used for consumption flowers should be organically grown or from a local grower who has grown them specifically for that purpose.

Christmas is over and now it's time to celebrate the New Year! I can't believe it is already 2012! Where does the time go....

Here in the United States we have many New Year's Eve and New Year's day traditions.
Probably the most famous tradition in the United States is the dropping of the New Year ball in Times Square, New York City, at 11:59 P.M. Thousands gather to watch the ball make its one-minute descent, arriving exactly at midnight. The tradition first began in 1907. The original ball was made of iron and wood; the current ball is made of Waterford Crystal, weighs 1,070 pounds, and is six feet in diameter.
The most commonly sung song on New Year's Eve is " Auld Lang Syne." This song is one of the most popular songs that no one knows the lyrics to. It literally translates as "old long since" and means "times gone by." The song asks whether old friends and times will be forgotten and promises to remember people of the past with fondness. New Year's is the time of the year for parties, friends and family.It is often thought that the first visitors you see after ringing in the New Year will bring you either good or bad luck depending on your relationship with them. That's why most people celebrate with friends and loved ones.

The 12 Days of Christmas

Many people believe that the 12 days of Christmas are the 12 days before Christmas. Actually The twelve days of Christmas are the twelve days after Christmas. They are the days between Christmas Day and The Epiphany, Jan. 6th. This is the day Christians celebrate the arrival of the Wise Men and the revelation of Christ as the light of the world.

The Christmas Song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is one of the most beloved Christmas songs. It is a silly song and there are many versions. But this song actually has religious symbolism and a quite serious purpose. It dates back from a time of religious persecution. The song was written as a kind of secret catechism that Christians could sing in public without fear of arrest. It was also a learning or memory aid to Christians. Each element of the song is a code word for a religious truth. These codes were known only to the Christians involved.

1. The partridge in a pear tree represents Jesus Christ.
2. The two turtledoves stand for the Old and New Testaments.
3. The Three French hens stand for faith, hope and love.
4. The four calling birds are the four Gospels.
5. The five gold rings stand for the first five books of the Old Testament. The Hebrew Torah.
6. The six geese a laying stand for the six days of creation.
7. The seven swans a swimming represent the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
8. The eight maids a milking are the eight Beatitudes.
9. Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.
10. The ten lords a leaping are the Ten Commandments.
11. Eleven pipers piping represent the eleven faithful Apostles.
12. Twelve drummers drumming symbolize the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostles creed.

The " true love " mentioned in the song refers to God Himself while the " me " receiving the gifts refers to every Christian. Through the years the song has become more of a fun Christmas tune for kids than a religious Christmas Carol. Most people that sing it are not thinking of it's meanings. There are different versions and people have changed the lyrics making it more modern and funny. One of the most famous rewrites is " The Twelve Pains of Christmas " which is sung to the same tune but the lyrics are all about the Twelve things that most people hate about Christmas like finding a Christmas tree, finding parking spaces, rigging up Christmas lights, five months of bills, and Etc.... But remember that that " Silly " song we sing at Christmas time has more meaning than we thought.

Winterhaven Festival of Lights

Every Year Tucson puts on it's own Festival of Lights. It is held in a little neighborhood known as Winterhaven. This weekend when the annual Festival begins for the season it will be the 62nd time that Tucson has enjoyed Winterhaven's charming neighborhood decorations. This small community decorates for the holidays every year with lights and decorations. All the streets close to traffic and this allows for people to enjoy an old time nostalgic Christmas experience. People walk, drive or are pulled by horse drawn wagons through the neighborhood enjoying all there is to see.

CB Richards was the founding father of Winterhaven Water & Development Company. In 1949 he created a cooperative water company and a modern residential development north of what was Tucson at the time. By 1957 all but 19 of the 257 original lots had been developed. The Festival of Lights began in 1949. CB Richards was inspired to create the Festival after visiting a similar display in Beverly Hills, California in the 1930s. He purchased the first set of christmas lights in 1949 and donated them to the neighborhood. He purchased the allepo pines from a local nursery that was going out of business. They were planted at regular intervals throughout the neighborhood and electrical connections were hooked up near each tree for the lights. CB personally judged all the displays in those first festival contests and the winner was awarded $100.00. After CB Richards moved to San Diego, he continued to visit Winterhaven for the Festival of Lights. The Festival has been held continuously since 1949 except for one year during the 1970's energy crisis when the residents of Winterhaven voted to stay dark.

Today you can enjoy Winterhaven many different ways. It is a celebration of the season and honors all Winter holidays regardless of religion and beliefs. There are walk through nights as well as drive through nights. Here is a map of the neighborhood to help you plan out your route if driving. Be careful and drive slowly because it is dark and there will be families and horses sharing the road with you. It starts at 6pm and ends at 10pm December 10th through the 25th. You can also enjoy the lights from a trolley or a horse drawn wagon. Check here for times and fees. There are many myths about Winterhaven here in Tucson. Probably the most known Myth is that if you live in Winterhaven you are required to decorate with lights for the Holiday season. The fact is that The Christmas spirit is alive and well with the families in Winterhaven. It is completely voluntary. Most residents participate because they love the Festival and see it as their gift to the community. So get out there and enjoy Winterhaven's Festival of lights. Spending time with family and getting into the spirit of the Holiday is what it is all About!

The Magic of Mistletoe

The season of Mistletoe is here! One of Christmas's oldest and most loved traditions is also a party favorite and can be a very romantic moment between new loves and old. From the earliest times Mistletoe has been one of the most magical, mysterious, and sacred plants of Christmas Folklore. It was considered to bestow life and fertility, protect against poison, and was used as an aphrodisiac. It was gathered at both mid-Summer and Winter solstices, and the custom of using Mistletoe to decorate houses for Christmas comes from Druid and other pre- Christian traditions. The Greeks also thought it had Mystical powers and down through the centuries it became associated with many folklore customs. In the middle ages and later, branches of Mistletoe were hung to ward off evil spirits in the house. In Europe they were placed over house and stable doors to prevent the entrance of witches. The traditions that began with the European Mistletoe were transferred to the similar American Mistletoe as America grew and was settled.

Kissing under the Mistletoe is first found associated with the Roman Festival of Saturnalia and later primitive marriage rituals. There are two beliefs that it probably originated from. One belief was that Mistletoe had the power to bestow fertility. It was also believed that Mistletoe possessed "life giving" power. In Scandinavia, Mistletoe was considered a plant of peace, under which enemies could declare a truce or fighting spouses could kiss and make-up. Later, the 18th century English are credited with dressing up a ball of mistletoe with evergreens, ribbons and ornaments. At Christmas time a young lady standing under this ball of Mistletoe cannot refuse to be kissed. such a kiss could mean deep romance or lasting friendship and goodwill. If the girl remained unkissed, she cannot expect not to marry the following year. In some parts of England the Christmas Mistletoe is burned on the 12th night or else all the boys and girls who have kissed under it never marry.
Whether we believe it or not, it always makes for great fun and frolic at Christmas celebrations. Even if the old significance has been long forgotten, the custom of exchanging a kiss under the Mistletoe is still very much around at the holidays in Europe, The United States and Canada.

For it's supposedly mystical power, Mistletoe has long been at the center of many folklores. The following legend is associated with the Goddess Frigga. The story goes that Mistletoe was the sacred plant of Frigga, goddess of love and the mother of Balder, The god of the summer sun. Balder had a dream of death which greatly alarmed his mother, for if he should die, all life on earth would end. In an attempt to keep this from happening, Frigga went at once to air, fire, water, earth and every animal and plant seeking a promise from them that no harm would come to her son. Balder now could not be hurt by anything on earth or under the earth. But Balder had one enemy, Loki, god of evil and he knew of the one plant that Frigga had overlooked in her quest to keep her son safe. It grew neither on the earth nor under the earth, but on Apple and Oak trees. It was Mistletoe. So Loki made an arrow tip of the Mistletoe, gave it to the blind God of Winter, Hoder, who shot it, striking Balder dead. The sky paled and all things in earth and heaven wept for the sun god. For three days each element tried to bring Balder back to life. He was finally restored by Frigga, the goddess of love and his mother. It is said that the tears she shed for her son turned into the pearly white berries on the Mistletoe plant and in her joy Frigga kissed everyone who passed beneath the tree on which it grew. The story ends with a decree that who ever stands under the Mistletoe, no harm should befall them, only a kiss, a token of love. It is easy to see how this story translates to the tradition of Mistletoe at Christmas time. So if you find yourself standing under Mistletoe this year, embrace tradition and Pucker up!

Poinsettia Care

The Christmas Season just wouldn't be the same without a beautiful Poinsettia decorating your home. Poinsettias are great potted plants and provide color for your home during and after the holiday season. They also make wonderful festive holiday gifts. Proper care is very important however for the plant to be able to maintain it's vigor and beauty. Here are a few helpful tips to make your poinsettia last.
Keep your new Poinsettia plant near a sunny window where it will have the most available sunlight. Sunlight should be available for the plant at least five hours a day. A window that faces south, east or west is the best location to place your Poinsettia. Do take precaution not to let any part of your plant touch the cold windowpane. Poinsettias are sensitive to cold and the cold of the windowpane may injure it.
Watering your Poinsettia can be tricky. They are in the Euphoria Family and are native to Mexico. With this said they do not like to become too dry so you should never let the soil in the pot completely dry out. If you feel dryness on top of the soil when touching it, do water it until water runs freely out the drainage hole in the container. The pot should be able to drain the excess water as water logging in the pot is not good for Poinsettia. Waterlogged soil lacks sufficient air, which may result damage of roots. Poinsettias exposed to high light and low humidity require more frequent watering. However never water your poinsettia if the soil feels wet. Too much water will cause the leaves to curl up and then fall off. An over watered Poinsettia will drop all of it's leaves and look very " Naked."
Maintain the temperature of the location where you have placed your plant at 65 to 70 degrees during the daylight hours for it to maintain it's blooming. It is a good practice to move Poinsettias to a cooler place at night but it is not a demanding criterion. Because root rot disease is more prevalent at temperatures below 60 degrees F, do not put the poinsettia in a room colder than this.

1. Poinsettias are the most popular of all holiday plants.
2. Poinsettias are native to southern Mexico and Central America.

3. Poinsettias also bloom in cream, lemon, peach, pink colors and with white- and gold-splashed leaves.

4. Poinsettia's botanical name, Euphorbia Pulcherrima, means "the most beautiful Euphorbia".
5. Poinsettia was named after the former US ambassador to Mexico, Dr. Joel R. Poinsett, who introduced the Poinsettia to the United States.
6. Research as proved that the Poinsettia is not poisonous.
7. Poinsettias, at times, reach a height of sixteen feet.
8. Poinsettias are also known by other names such as 'Christmas flower', 'lobster flower', and 'Mexican flame leaf'.
Keeping your Poinsettia throughout the year and getting it to re bloom for next Christmas
can require a little work on your part as well as a lot of love. Most people think it is just easier to get a new plant next year than try to save and revive the old one. But if you just love your plant and cannot bear to throw it here are some guidelines to follow for a successful bloom next year..

Here is a little history on how Poinsettias became such a popular Christmas Plant.

The ancient Aztecs (the Mexican Indians) prized the Poinsettia as a symbol of purity. Centuries later, Mexico's early Christians adopted the Poinsettia as their prized Christmas Eve flower. The Mexican poinsettia, known as the Christmas flower in North America, is used in most Christmas decorations, owing to its bright red color and its blooming season coinciding with the Christmas holiday season.

The Mexican poinsettias are commonly bright red. For some, these star-shaped bracts symbolize the Star of Bethlehem. The Christmas Poinsettia flowers have become a symbol of Christmas and are used in festive decor.

A Mexican legend explains how Poinsettias came to be associated with Christmas. Apparently, a child who could not afford a gift to offer to Christ on Christmas Eve picked some weeds from the side of a road. The child was told that a humble gift, if given in love, would be acceptable in God's eyes. When brought into the church, the weeds bloomed into red and green flowers and the congregation felt that they had witnessed a Christmas miracle.

Thank you to everyone who came out and donated blood on Sat. Nov. 26th! The Annual Sean Coleman blood drive was held Sat. Nov.26th at the Mayfield location at Tanque Verde and Sabino Canyon Rd.
This year more then 70 people showed up to donate a pint of their blood for the cause.
This is a great turnout and will help save lives! Many people had made appointments ahead of time, but we also had many walk-ins who were also able to donate. Sean Coleman was here personally thanking people for their donations and handing out free roses to the donors. Donors were able to choose to keep their roses or pass them along.

Every year Don Coleman teams up with the American Red Cross to hold the drive in honor of his son Sean, who at the age of 4 months received a life saving blood transfusion after a heart transplant. The blood drive is the Coleman's way of saying thank you to the community. This is the ninth year that they have held the Blood Drive.

Each person that donated received a free dozen roses. Donors had the choice to keep their roses or to donate them to either TMC Peppi's house or the Diamond Children's Center at UMC. This year over 20 people donated their roses!

Holiday Plants That Last Throughout The Year

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas Everywhere you go.....The garden centers and grocery stores are already loading up on Poinsettias for the holiday season. And not just the red or cream-colored ones you know. No, now you can get a turquoise, glittered poinsettia for your mantle. They are coming in many colors, some two or three different colors! The red ones are still my favorite. They are so gorgeous and nothing really says Christmas to me than a beautiful red Poinsettia. However, Poinsettias are generally considered to be "throw-away" plants, barely making it through the holiday season before being tossed by the thousands out onto the curb. They are a difficult plant to keep up with. They require much care and getting them to re bloom for the next year takes a lot of maintenance. As traditional and beautiful as they are for Christmas if you would like a Holiday plant that lasts throughout the whole year consider one of these....

1. Norfolk Island Pine- This pine tree is another pretty popular Holiday plant. Many people decorate them to use as a living Christmas tree. They have symmetrical, long, soft foliage which makes decorating them fun! These plants can grow after the holiday is over with very little care. Most Temperature ranges are suitable but sudden changes in Temperatures should be avoided. They like bright light and need to be watered thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch.
2. Gardenia- If you want fragrance in your home, you can't go wrong with a gardenia. Even when not in bloom, this plant's glossy, dark green leaves make it a very attractive houseplant. Gardenias can be a bit fussy about conditions: they require bright light, high humidity, and even moisture. If you can provide these, you should get at least one gardenia for your home.
3. Cyclamen- Cyclamen can provide a real pop of color during the holidays, and, if you care for the plant, will continue to do so for years to come. You can find cyclamen in most commonly red, white, fuchsia or pink blooms. Cyclamen require a dormant stage to bloom again, but that really makes it an even easier houseplant to care for!
4. Amaryllis- If you love blooms, you need to get your hands on some amaryllis bulbs! You typically find them everywhere this time of year, usually sold in boxes as complete planting kits. This is a convenient way to get them, but if you want more variety in your choices, you'll want to call Mayfield to see what we have available. Amaryllis provide gorgeous blooms during the holiday season if you plant the bulbs in November. Many people treat these as throw-aways as well, but it's actually quite simple to get them to bloom again next holiday season.
5. Christmas Cactus- Also known as "Thanksgiving Cactus" (they are typically sold in bloom for both holidays) these succulent plants are fairly simple to care for. They don't do well in dim, drafty, dry areas, so you'll have to make sure you have a good spot for them. If you do, they'll reward you with blooms during the holidays for years to come.
6. Orchids- These beautiful exotic plants make a stunning gift! They can be decorated elegantly for the holiday. Many people get nervous about them because they seem hard to care for but in reality they are a long lasting plant that can easily grow and re bloom. These plants require bright in direct light and like to be moist. They grow best in humidity so bathrooms, kitchens and around other plants is the best spot to keep them in. This Thanksgiving, whether it is your first time hosting the family dinner or you are a seasoned pro, put time and effort into decorating your table. It doesn't take much to turn your meal into a festive masterpiece. Floral creations and traditional things like Fall decor and cornucopias are just a few of the ideas out there for the perfect Thanksgiving Dinner.

Here are some other ideas to help make this Thanksgiving the best.

1. Accessorize a large table by placing a long, narrow centerpiece in the center of the table. Add a few smaller accent pieces or candles on each side of the arrangement for an added effect.

Sean Coleman 2011 Annual Blood Drive

Mayfield Florist and The American Red Cross are teaming up again to help save lives! The Annual Sean Coleman blood drive is happening on Nov. 26th from 9am to 2pm at 7181 E Tanque Verde Rd in Tucson. Come out and donate blood! This is a great way to help out and give back!
Since 2003, Don Coleman has been working with the American Red Cross to hold the Blood Drive. It is in Honor of his son Sean Coleman whose life was saved by a blood transfusion following a heart transplant when he was four months old.

Sean Coleman was diagnosed days after his birth with a heart defect that leads to the thickening of the heart walls and eventually limits the pumping action of the organ. His parents had lost his older brother, Patrick, to the disease four months before Sean was born.

He was placed on a transplant waiting list and, when he was 4 months old, on Nov. 29, 1995, he became the youngest heart transplant patient at University Medical Center. Today Sean is an active normal sophomore in high school. He is an amazing young man.

Don, who is co-owner of Mayfield, schedules the blood drive around the anniversary of his son's successful operation.
Each donor will receive a dozen Free roses. They will have the option to "Pay it Forward" and donate their roses to either Peppi's House (TMC Hospice) or the Diamond Children's Medical Center. 2010 was a great success with more than 70 people coming out and donating. This year we hope to have even more but we need your help!

How to stay Healthy During The Holidays

It's November! The Holidays are officially here! The month of November also happens to be Good Nutrition Month. It's sort of ironic that the month we celebrate Thanksgiving and Family is also a month dedicated to eating healthy and watching your nutrition. Many people don't want to think about it until it's time for their New Year's Resolution but here are some tips to help you stay healthy during this time of year!
With all the great things like family, fun and FOOD, staying healthy can be a BIG challenge. So, in the spirit of Christmas, here are some ways to enjoy this Holiday season to the fullest, while still looking out for your health.

1. Spend time with people you love. The merriment of the holidays is one thing that makes this time of year so special. So embrace the spirit, enjoy your family, and put aside old grudges and differences. Letting go of old hurt does the body good, and love and laughter are like medicine for the soul.
2. Stick to your regular exercise program. It can be very easy to break a workout habit, especially during the holidays. But if you've got one, try to maintain it and you will thank yourself when New Year's comes along. If you are traveling for the holidays make sure to stay active and get in a walk a day. Even if it's just around the block.
3. Enjoy the outdoors. Christmas is a wonderful time to get out into nature and revel in the beauty of Winter. Maybe that means speeding down a slope, taking a leisurely walk, playing a friendly game of backyard football, or having an all-out snowball fight. These are just some ideas but it's all up to you!! Get out and enjoy the season!!
4. Watch your sweets intake. There are so many delicious treats everywhere this time of year. In fact it's hard to get away from them! You wouldn't want to miss out on anything yummy.. so please partake of all the goodies, but also take care not to over-indulge. The best rule of thumb is small portions. You can eat whatever you would like just in moderation.
5. Moderation is key. This can be a time when people overdo it because of the availability of so much great food and drink. However, it is so important to eat and drink in moderation if you are trying to maintain your health over the holidays. Your waistline will thank you after all is said and done!
6. Take vitamins to ward off illness. Taking immune boosting supplements and antioxidants are great ways to avoid getting sick during the holidays. Take them often if you feel a cold coming on and you can usually avoid a full blown attack.
Here is a recipe for Low carb Pumpkin muffins...
1/2 cup coconut flour (find at natural food stores)
2 teas. ground cinnamon
1/2 teas. ground nutmeg
1/4 teas. ground cloves
1/2 teas. baking soda
1/2 teas. salt
1/2 cup canned pureed pumpkin
6 eggs, beaten
3 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
1/3 cup honey
1 teas. vanilla extract
12 pecans for topping
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Oil muffin pans.
2. In a medium bowl, combine the coconut flour, spices, baking soda and salt.
3. In another bowl, place the pumpkin puree then add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add melted coconut, honey and vanilla and mix until well combined.
4. Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture, blend with a whisk until most lumps have disappeared.
5. Spoon into prepared muffin pan, filling each muffin 2/3 full. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden.
6. Place on wire rack to cool.
One serving equals: 127 calories, 7g fat, 230mg sodium, 11.7 carbohydrate, 3g fiber, and 5g protein.

How to make Sugar Skulls

Sugar Skulls are A Day of the Dead Tradition. They are placed on decorated and placed on altars.

Sugar art was brought to the New World by Italian missionaries in the 17th century. The first Church mention of sugar art was from Palermo at Easter time when little sugar lambs and angels were made to adorn the side altars in the Catholic Church.

Mexico, abundant in sugar production and too poor to buy fancy imported European church decorations, learned quickly from the friars how to make sugar art for their religious festivals. Clay molded sugar figures of angels, sheep and sugar skulls go back to the Colonial Period 18th century. Sugar skulls represented a departed soul, had the name written on the forehead and was placed in the home or on the gravestone to honor the return of a particular spirit. Sugar skull art reflects the folk art style of big happy smiles, colorful icing and sparkly tin and glittery adornments. Sugar skulls are labor intensive and made in very small batches in the homes of sugar skull makers. These wonderful artisans are disappearing as fabricated and imported candy skulls take their place.

Here are the steps to create your very own sugar skulls...

Supplies:
1 set of plastic skull molds
Mixing bowl and spoon
2 cups of granulated sugar
2 teaspoons of meringue powder
2 teaspoons of water
1 piece of cardboard, approximately 5" x 5"

Mix the dry ingredients together in the bowl. Sprinkle the water in and continue to mix until the sugar is completely moistened and becomes the consistency of moist sand. Scoop some of the mixture into the mold and pack it evenly and firmly. Place the piece of cardboard on top of the mold and quickly flip it over so the sugar skull pops out. Very carefully slide it onto a flat surface.

Let them dry for 24 hours in a dry place.

Icing:
2/3 cup of water
1/2 cup meringue powder
2 pounds of powdered sugar
Electric mixer
Concentrated food coloring (the kind professional cake bakers use)
1 pastry or Ziploc bag
Plastic cups
Spoon

Blend the ingredients with an electric mixer until the peaks form in the icing. If using assorted colors, scoop the white icing into separate bowls and add a dab of different colored food coloring in each one. Mix again. Scoop the icing into the pastry or Ziploc bag (snip the corner for the latter). Continue until you have several bags of different colors. Keep sealed and refrigerated until use.

Dia De Los Muertos

November 2nd is Dia De Los Muertos or Day of The Dead. This Mexican holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Although this is traditionally celebrated in Mexico, where it is a National Holiday, Here in Tucson it has been a popular celebration since 1990 when our annual All Soul's Procession started.
This procession is held on 4th ave and downtown. It is quite the scene! The event combines elements of traditional Day of the Dead celebrations with those of pagan harvest festivals. People wearing masks carry signs honoring the dead and an urn in which people can place slips of paper with prayers on them to be burned.
There are many beliefs, symbols, and traditions for this holiday. People visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried to be with the souls of the departed. They build private altars containing favorite foods, beverages, photos and other memorabilia of the deceased. The intent is to encourage their loved ones souls to visit and hear the prayers and comments for them. They hold picnics at the grave sites and decorate the grave with Marigolds and skulls. A common symbol of the holiday is the skull which celebrants represent in masks, and foods such as sugar or chocolate skulls, which are inscribed with the name of the recipient on the forehead. Sugar skulls are gifts that can be given to both the living and the dead. Marigolds are the traditional flower of the Day of the Dead. They are used to attract the souls of the dead. In Mexico the name Marigold is often replaced with the term " flor de muerto " meaning " Flower of the dead."
The picture above is of Catrinas. She is one of the most popular figures of the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico. She is traditionally dressed to the nines with an ornate hat and matching gown with a skeleton head. She is usually made out of clay or paper mache.
Some families build altars or small shrines in their homes. Pictures of deceased relatives and other persons, scores of candles, Christian Crosses, and pictures of the Blessed Virgin Mary are incorporated in these shrines. Traditionally, families spend some time around the altar, praying and telling anecdotes about the deceased. In some locations, celebrants wear shells on their clothing, so that when they dance, the noise will wake up the dead; some will also dress up as the deceased. Here are a few Creative ideas for Halloween Decorating... Halloween is such a fun time of year! It's a great chance to turn flowers into spooky fun but you can also use vegetables, sticks, googly eyes, masks, fake spider webs, And all sorts of other everyday items to arrangements to reaaly get into the spirit!

By gluing googly eyes to broccoli florets and arranging the broccoli in a short orange or clear cubed vase with greens at the bottom you have what resembles the blob! This arrangement is really cute and great for a appetizer table at any Halloween party!

Glue two Holly leaves together and spray them black and they make delightful bats! Glue or wire them to Birch branches or curly willow and insert them into a fall bokay and you have a scary bat arrangement! You can even use fishing line to hang them from the branches and they look like they are flying around the flowers. Put the flowers in a Halloween themed container and place in the entrance way of your home. Trick or Treaters will love it and so will guests arriving to your Halloween party!

You can create a graveyard arrangement out of different types of Branches. Pick out a few that resemble miniature trees and spray them black. You can buy miniature grave stones and other decor at any Halloween store. Place the decorations and " Trees " around your flowers to create a spooky graveyard setting. You may need to buy a floral foam called Oasis to insert your flowers and branches into to keep them steady.

Masks make great decor on Halloween designs. Incorporate them into a high style or tropical arrangement to get the best effect out of them. Use interesting textures and greens and cool looking flowers like birds of Paradise or Protea. Arrange them in a vase or some other ceramic or glass container. Glue or tie your masks to a long stick or branch and insert into the arrangement however you desire!

Sweetest Day

Sweetest Day is a Day dedicated just to your Sweetie! It occurs on the third Saturday in October every year. This Year it is October 15th. It exists as an opportunity for you to recognize that sweet and special someone. It doesn’t matter who that person is, or what their relation to you. They just have to be "sweet" in order to get a little recognition.
This day was first celebrated in 1922. Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio philanthropist and candy company employee started Sweetest Day. He wanted to bring happiness to orphans, shut-ins and under-privileged. His intent was to show these people that they were not forgotten. In 1922, he started this holiday by giving candy and small gifts. He often used movie stars to distribute the gifts. On the first Sweetest Day, Movie star Ann Pennington Presented 2,200 Cleveland newspaper boys with boxes of candy to express gratitude for their service to the public. Another popular movie star, Theda Bara, distributed 10,000 boxes of candy to people in Cleveland Hospitals and also gave candy to all who came to watch her film in a local theater.
The popularity of this holiday quickly spread. Over the years, Sweetest Day has evolved into a time to express romantic love and also to show appreciation to friends. Today, it is celebrated with loved ones and friends. People give Candy and flowers to their Sweetheart or loved ones. Sweetest Day is a special holiday growing in popularity. Here are some great ideas for celebrating this Saturday!

The Tenth anniversary of 9/11

This Sunday September 11th, the nation will honor the people lost in the 9/11 attacks. This day will mark the 10th anniversary of those attacks and Tucson is also doing it's part to honor all of the fallen.

Many events will be taking place in and around Tucson on September 11th. Here are a few that are open to the public if you would like to participate in an event this Sunday.

At 8 am mayor Bob Walkup will be present to commemorative laying of the wreath. This will take place at Fire Station One at 265 s Church st. This begins at 8am. At 9am after the ceremony will be the Fire Truck Procession to Randolph Park. This starts at Fire Station One and ends at the Reid Park Bandshell. The route is down Broadway to Alvernon to 22nd st to Country Club to the Bandshell. At 9:30 am Mayor Walkup and Dr. Richard Carmona, M.D., M.P.H. faculty, as well as John Green, Christina Green's father, will be speaking at the 9/11 memorial held by Tucson Firefighters Association and the Tucson Police offers Association. This will be held at the Bandshell.

Another event going on is the Memorial Tower Challenge. The Tucson police department SWAT team is hosting this difficult event. It will be held at 5151 E Broadway blvd and starts at 11am. All proceeds and donations collected will benefit The Wounded Warrior Project to help those injured while serving in the armed forces. Runners will climb the 17 floors 7 times which is the equivalent to the 110 stories that the firefighters on 9/11 climbed to help people to safety.

Habitat for Humanity will be building Ten homes for ten families in Tucson this Sunday starting at 6am. They will be helped by 400 volunteers to get the houses built in a day. This will be happening all over Tucson in Ten different locations.

Here is a little history about Grandparent's Day and why we celebrate.
Grandparent's Day was founded by a woman named Marion McQuade of Oak Hill, West Virginia.
McQuade made it her goal to educate the youth in the community about the important contributions seniors have made throughout history. She also encouraged the youth to "adopt" a grandparent for a lifetime.

In 1973 Marion McQuade organized supporters and began contacting governors, senators and congressmen in all fifty states and urging them to proclaim their own Grandparent's Day. Within three years she had received grandparent's Day proclamations from forty three states. She sent copies of these proclamations to senator Jennings Randolph. In February 1977 Senator Randolph introduced a joint resolution to the senate requesting the President to issue a proclamation designating that the first Sunday after Labor Day of each year be known as Grandparent's Day. On August 3rd, 1978 then- President Jimmy Carter signed the Proclamation and Grandparent's Day was born.

The statute says that the days purpose is to " Honor Grandparents, to give Grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of strength, information and guidance older people can offer."

To this day Grandparent's day has been celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day. This year that day is September 11th. Your Grandparents will be delighted to receive the gift of flowers delivered especially for them.

How to make a hand-tied Rose bouquet

Hand-Tied Rose bouquets look very elegant and are fairly easy to assemble. To retain it's fresh look, the bouquet should be created the day it will be used. These bouquets are beautiful for weddings and other celebrations. They look gorgeous in red, white, pink, lavender, yellow and any other color that you can find roses in. You can add a filler flower to accent or leave it just roses. Either way it looks beautiful.
Use between twelve and twenty slightly opened roses. You can find them at Mayfield in many colors! Remove all the foliage and thorns from each stem. ( This will protect your hands from getting stuck while you carry it.) To add support to the stem, cut a 20-gauge floral wire( you can get floral wire at Mayfield) one-half inch longer than the rose stem. Place the wire along the stem and push about one-half inch of the wire into the base of the Rose head. Starting near the base of the flower head, wrap the wire and stem together with floral tape. Repeat this process with all the flowers.
Place all of the roses together into a group to form the full bouquet. Intersperse foliage such as baker fern and baby's breath between the roses. You can also leave the filler flower out for a very clean and elegant looking bouquet. About three to four inches below the bottommost flower heads, tape the stems together for a few inches, forming a handle. Cover the taped rose stems by wrapping with 1-inch-wide ribbon and finish with a two-loop bow.

September Flower of The Month.... Asters

The September flower of the Month is the Aster. The name " Aster" comes from the Greek word for " star ", referring to the shape of the flower. Asters stand for Love, Faith and Wisdom. They symbolize Valor. The hidden meaning of Asters comes from the Victorian Era and is simply " Take care of yourself for me." The Victorians were highly conservative and strongly restricted by the rules of etiquette. It was considered totally inappropriate to express feelings of love or affection. Therefore they came up with the language of flowers. They assigned a certain message to a specific flower such as the Aster. A lover could then send flowers which conveyed a hidden romantic meaning. Even today people enjoy knowing the meanings of flowers and there colors when sending to loved ones.

The Aster comes in many colors and types. They are a daisy like flower in pink, red, white, mauve, and lilac with yellow centers. They have multiple petals and are very long lasting in floral arrangements. Although mostly used as an accent flower to other larger flowers, they can be very striking one their own in a vase with greens.

With their wildflower beauty and lush texture, asters have long been considered an enchanted flower. In ancient times, it was thought that the perfume from their burning leaves could drive away evil serpents. Today, they’re known as a talisman of love and a symbol of patience. Here are a few interesting facts about the September flower of the month and the 20th wedding anniversary flower...

The genus aster dates back over 4,000 years and has been used to decorate homes and gardens for centuries. Asters are part of the largest family of flowering plant-families, Asteraceae. A fair number of the approximately 600 species that are part of the aster genus are native to North America and can be easily spotted throughout the country for their lovely clusters of purple, blue, pink, white, or red petals.

This flower is not a single flower. While the aster looks like a single flower, it is actually a cluster of about 300 small yellow disk flowers that are surrounded by colorful petals. This gives the illusion of a sole flower and creates a plush look.

Aster is the common name attributed to this flower throughout the universe. In many languages throughout the world, including Swedish, Spanish, French, and Dutch, the aster is also pronounced as it is in English and Greek, “aster.” This flower needs no other name, as it is so well-known and loved.

The most common time to find asters is during the late summer and fall months, from late July to late October. Thus, as the leaves begin to fall and the sky begins to darken, asters enliven their environment with their lovely pastel colors.

Asters are not just used in gardens or as fresh cut flowers. In Denmark and Holland, asters are often the flower of choice to create an eye-catching windowsill decoration. They have a smaller flower than the daisy and are, therefore, the perfect size for many windowsills. August Flower of the Month.... Gladiolus

The Gladiolus is one of the most beautiful flowers available almost year round. Gladiolus get their name from the Latin word Gladus which means "sword" because of the shape of their leaves. They are in the Iris family and and originated in Africa. They are very popular in gardens and cut flower arrangements. People love them because of their many colors, their graceful blooms, and their magnificent height. They can grow 2 to 5 feet tall! They come in every color from red to white and many shades in between. Gladiolus grow from an enlarged bulb-like underground stem called a corm. Corms are planted each spring and dug in the fall. Each summer the old "mother corm" shrivels and dries up soon after the leaves emerge from the ground. One or more new corms are then produced during the growing season. These new corms are dug in the fall and stored over winter.
To produce glads with large spikes, plant the corms in a location that receives full sunlight. Brighter flower colors and sturdier stalks are produced in full sunlight. Select a location having protection from strong winds. Glads need regular water. Keep the soil moist and do not let them dry out. Lack of moisture often causes shorter spikes, smaller florets and smaller corms for next season. Adequate moisture is especially important when flower spikes are beginning to form. Apply 1 inch of water per week if rainfall is insufficient.
There are many myths and legends about the origin of the Gladiolus. Here is one of my favorites...
There once was a prince named Iolus. He was a kind and just ruler of his kingdom and was beloved by all. Unfortunately he could not find his beloved true love in his kingdom. He heard of a beautiful girl named Glad that was being held captive in the neighboring kingdom by an evil wizard who was forcing her to marry him.
Iolus went in search of the beautiful maiden. He came upon the castle of the evil wizard asking him to teach his magic and was accepted. When the wizard was away Iolus found the maiden and they fell in love at first sight. Holding hands they ran away from the castle. Glad and Iolus were far away when the wizard caught up with them They were turned into a long slender flower with beautiful, delicate, buds. Later people called the flower Gladiolus in honor of the strong love of two hearts who will never be apart.

The Birds and Bees of Flowers

Flowers are not only the most attractive part of a plant. They play a very important role in the life of a plant as well. The flower is the reproductive organ of a plant. In fact all plants whether they are cacti, green plants, blooming plants, and even aquatic plants bloom in some way. Some very differently than others but all plants will produce some sort of bloom. For reproduction to take place, pollen grains from the male part called the stamen must be carried to the female part of the flower called the pistil.
Two ways that flowers are pollinated are by insects and by the wind. The most effective method is insects. The insects are attracted to the flowers by many different elements. For example, some flowers put off different smells, both good and bad, to attract an insect to them. Others mimic different types of insects with the way a bloom looks. A great example of this is the Orchid. There are so many types of Orchids all with different unique looking blooms. But if you look closely at a bloom you might notice the similarities to insects that they have. The blooms have many characteristics of insects. This "tricks" a male insect into thinking the bloom is a female insect and the male will then be attracted to the flower. Flies, bees, butterflies, ladybugs, and birds are all pollen spreaders. They land on the flower to drink the nectar from the flower. Many plants have evolved over time so that their leaves act as landing strips for bugs to have easy access to the nectar. When a bee touches the stamen, pollen sticks to the bee. When the bee moves around the flower, pollen is transferred to the pistil. This is whats called Pollination. Pollination leads to the flower producing seeds. The seeds are then carried by either wind or insect and dropped. When they settle, if they have enough water and space to grow they start to germinate. From there the young plant or seedling grows roots and turns into a full grown plant. This is why insects are so important in the process. Without them it would be much harder to spread the pollen from the stamen to the pistil. Another plant that has an interesting blooming pattern is the night blooming Cereus. This plant is actually a type of Cacti that only blooms at night. It's common name is " Queen of the Night " because it's blooms open for only one night and are beautiful, large, white, trumpet shaped flowers with multiple petals. These blooms open in early June and have a lovely fragrance which attracts insects and birds. The blooms begin opening around nine or ten pm and are fully open by midnight. This time period requires you to stay up late or rise early if you want to catch a glimpse of the magnificent flower but you would be amazed at the beautiful flower this rather plain looking cactus produces.

How to Dry Flowers

From Birthdays and Anniversaries to Wedding and Party bouquets, flowers make special memories in hearts everyday. Loving your bouquet so much you want to preserve it is a great way to also preserve the memory. Drying flowers can be fun for all ages as well.

Here are a few simple ways to preserve your flowers for years to come..

First thing you will want to do is asses whether your flower bouquet will dry well. Blooms should not be fully mature or they will lose their petals in the drying process. Also consider the types of flowers being used as different flowers dry differently. Air drying is best for robust varieties such as roses, or smaller longer lasting flowers like Lavender. Air drying is done by letting your flowers air dry naturally usually upside down. Here are some great tips....

1. Strip excess foliage from your flowers and cut the stems to your desired length (but not shorter than six inches). To help your flowers maintain their color during the drying process, it is important that you remove them from sunlight as soon as they're cut. Rubber band bunches of stems together if you would like to hang a bouquet, or leave the stems be if you'd like to hang the flowers individually.

2. Find a dark, dry area with good circulation. An unused closet will work perfectly. With unflavored dental floss, secure the bottom end of the flower's stem to a hanger. You may hang two flowers/bunches on each hanger by hanging items from each side, or you can hang one flower/bunch by hanging it from the middle. Once secure, hang flowers upside down to dry. Leave your flowers there for a good two to three weeks and make sure not to remove them until they are completely dry.

3. Remove the flowers from the hangers and spray them with hairspray to give them some extra protection. You can now hang your dried flowers around the house as you please, remove the petals and make potpourri, or use them in a crafts-related project to make a thoughtful gift for someone else. Dried flowers don't like sunlight or extreme heat, so try to find homes for them in more shaded areas.

Another way to preserve your flowers is by pressing them. This works great with more delicate flowers like lilies. This is very easy. Just find a good heavy book and press your flowers in the middle. The effect that this creates is a softer more delicate dried flower that is perfect for displaying in a frame or under glass on a coffee table for example.
Still another way to dry flowers is in the microwave. There is a little bit more to this then pressing or air drying but it works well with flowers such as Gerber Daisies, mums, tulips, and roses. The benefits to the microwave are the flowers will hold their color and structure better then air drying. Here's how it's done...

1. Find a microwave-safe container that will hold your flowers and fit into the microwave. (Do not use a dish you might want to use for food again after this project.) Your flowers will dry to the shape of the bottom of your container if you do not support them, so you will need to use silica gel in the container to help the flowers maintain their shape. Cover the bottom of the container with about an inch or two of silica gel (more for larger blossoms), place your flowers in the gel with the flower blossom opening upward, and then gently pour gel over the flower to ensure all petals are positioned to dry properly. If you are not careful with the gel, you can flatten your petals. Still, be liberal with it for best results. Don't worry; your silica gel can be used over and over again.

2. Microwave temperature and time will vary from flower to flower, so find the right recipes by trial and error. Place your uncovered container in the microwave. A safe bet is to start the microwave on one or two levels above defrost for 2-5 minutes. Roses can withstand more heat; daisies prefer lower temperatures. Start with a short amount of time, checking your flower's progress periodically. If it doesn't seem to be drying, you can increase heat and time accordingly.

3. Once your flowers have dried, open the microwave and immediately cover the container. Remove the covered container from the microwave, open the top a quarter of a centimeter, and let it sit for 24 hours. Once the flowers have cooled, clean off the petals with a fine brush and mist them with an acrylic spray. Voila! Fresh baked flowers!

Whichever method you use have fun preserving memories for years to come. Who knows you may enjoy it so much that you make it into a new hobby and decorate your house with beautiful dried flowers!

Arizona monsoon Season 2011

Tucson's Monsoon season is probably the most anticipated season of the whole year here in the Sonoran Desert. After the light Spring rains we have in March and April it stays pretty hot and dry until July. Between July and September though get ready. We are hit hard with heavy rains, lightning and thunder and Wind and dust storms. It can be pretty exciting here, causing the dry river beds to overflow and the Desert life to grow and flourish. The Lightning storms against the beautiful Desert skies are quite the site to see.

If you have ever wondered what causes these crazy storms we look forward to each Summer,
Monsoon Thunderstorms are convective in nature. That means that the thunderstorms are powered by intense surface heating and strong moisture in the air. The Arizona State University
School of Geographical sciences and Urban Planning has an article that explains our Monsoon season very well.

There are many benefits to the Monsoon but there are many safety issues as well. Many Motorists have had to be saved from their own cars after driving into what they thought or hoped was a shallow and mild wash. The rushing water can be very deceiving and it can carry away both cars and trucks. Lightning is also a big safety issue during this time of year. At times it is all around and can strike just about anywhere. Wind and dust can take down trees and make visibility when driving very poor. Your safest bet is just to stay inside and enjoy the weather going on around you.

Here are a few safety tips if you do get caught in a Monsoon storm...

If you see a sign that says "Do Not Cross When Flooded," take it seriously. If you are caught in a wash, try to climb out on the roof of your vehicle and wait for help. Use your cell phone, if available, to call 911.
If you're driving when it's raining, slow down. Remember that the beginning of rain storms in the area are the most dangerous times since that's when oils and other automotive fluids are being washed off the roads causing unusually slick conditions.
If your visibility is impeded by heavy rain or blowing dust, most people will reduce their speed, but keep driving straight. Don't change lanes unless absolutely necessary. Area drivers will often use their emergency blinkers (hazard lights) during the storm because blinking lights are easier to see. If you don't want to drive in the storm, slowly pull off to the side of the road as far to the right as possible, turn off your car, turn off your lights, and keep your foot off the brake pedal. Otherwise, drivers may come up quickly behind you assuming that you're still in motion.
To avoid being struck by lightning stay away from open fields, high land, trees, poles, other tall objects, standing bodies of water including swimming pools, and metal objects including golf clubs and lawn chairs.

Even if you are at home there are things you can do to keep yourself safe and comfortable..

Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment during storms to decrease the draw on power companies. This is a prime time for power outages in the area.
Because of the risk of power failure, keep batteries, a working batter-powered radio or television, flashlights, and candles handy. If the power goes out, remember to keep lit candles out of direct drafts.
Stay off the phone. Even cordless phones can cause a shock in cases of nearby lightning strikes. Use cellular phones for emergencies only.
Stay away from plumbing fixtures including showers, baths, and sinks. Lightning can travel through metal pipes.
Keep your distance from windows as high winds can blow heavy debris.

Handle with Care

Everyone loves receiving flowers! The gorgeous colors and beautiful blooms light up days and make anyone feel special. This is such a great feeling you want it to last as long as possible. Unfortunately flowers are a perishable item and will eventually whither and die. From the second they are cut they have lost their lifeline and have just a few precious days to be enjoyed. Whether you had a flower arrangement delivered to you from a local florist or have cut some blooms out of your garden there are ways you can prolong their life, thus keeping them around longer.

First and foremost flower stems need water! The stems draw water and nutrients up from where they were cut. Yeah, we know, Nature is amazing! Even more amazing is that they only drink what is beneficial to them. This is why the water in the vase or container MUST be kept clean and changed often. Second, how you handle the stems of your flowers is the key element to prolonging their life. Air pockets and bacteria from dirty water can become lodged at the bottom of the stem and prevents clean water from moving up the stem. This is when the flower can no longer drink and it starts to die. The best way to prevent this is to cut one or two inches off the bottom of your stems whenever they have been out of clean water. The longer the stem the more you will need to cut off.
Some flowers last longer then others and so as they start to die, remove them from the vase. This is part of that keeping your arrangement clean thing we talked about earlier. Move your flowers to a smaller vase as you remove the dead ones. Making sure that their are no leaves or debris in the vase under the water.

Flower stems are a lot like drinking straws. In fact the best way to describe the inside of a stem is to think of them as very narrow drinking straws, bundled together. Every inch or so there are semipermeable cell plates that help to reduce foreign matter. The cell plates are the reason that bacteria does not move all the way up the stem. Before the flower is cut the roots are the filtering system. Without the roots the cell plates are easily clogged. Again very important to cut the stems often.

Turgor pressure is what keeps water and nutrients moving up the stem of the flower. The only reason a cut flower stands upright is because it is full of water. As water evaporates from the leaves and the bloom it creates a powerful pressure, like a vacuum. This pressure is enabled by the specialized structure of the cells. The moment the stem is cut it is sucking against gravity looking to pull in water. You have between one and ten seconds to put the stem in clean water. Cutting the stems under water is a great method of preventing air and bacteria from getting in the stem and having it die sooner.

Certain things help to prolong life when added to the water. Florists will have floral life packets which are best but you can also add sugar to the water. In nature, plants manufacture sugar through photosynthesis. When a flower is cut photosynthesis is much reduced so it is best to replace that sugar. Flower foods also contain citric acid and clarifying agents for the water.

So remember these tips for the next time you have cut flowers in the home. They will definitely help you get the most life out of your blooms so you may enjoy them for days!!!

How to grow Sunflowers!

Sunflowers are best known for their unique tall stem appearance. The stems can reach up to six feet tall or more depending on species. Some dwarf varieties may only reach a stem height of a few feet.

The heads are often bright yellow, with a green or black center eye. Once dried, the heads produce many seeds that are frequently eaten. The seeds are often added to salads or fed to birds or wildlife.

Soil-

Sunflowers require well drained soil that is well nourished to grow. Rocky or clay filled soils may need to be enriched before planting. To do this, organic material or compost can be added to the soil.

Mineral fertilizers are important to add before sowing or planting. Fertilizers can help with encouraging better growth in the summer. This may be necessary if the soil is depleted from previous planting.

Some may prefer to mulch lightly to provide protection and moisture. Keeping the soil moist but not soaked is important for best growth. This makes ensuring proper drainage important for any garden type.

Sun-

Sun requirements are an important aspect of sunflower planting tips. Full sun is essential, with at least six hours of direct sun daily. The more sun available, the faster and stronger they will grow.

Sunflowers will flourish when planted in areas that have no shade. To reach maximum height this is important to take into consideration. For less sunny areas, more compact species can be used in gardens.

Sowing-

For the largest flowers, direct sowing is the best course of action. Many flowers gardening is started in pots, which can reduce size. The seeds should be put directly into ground and nurtured carefully.

Ample space should be given between sprouts for the best sizes. This gives them room for the roots to grow and become established. Closer plantings may result in smaller flower heads or short stems.

Staking-

Staking is often needed for flowers when they grow taller. As these can grow very tall it is necessary to give them more support. Without it the stem or head may bend or droop, reducing its quality.

To do this, a steel or wooden stake should be driven into the ground. Twine or other thin rope may be used to attach the stem to stakes. Additional supports may be necessary if the heads grow too large.

Feeding-

Regular feeding can help keep the soil quality in the best condition. Sunflower plants can deplete the soil quickly during growing season. Depending on the soil condition, it may take a gallon or more weekly.

The best way to add this is to dig a small moat or hole near plants. Fertilizer or food can then be added while watering the sunflower. This can provide them with enough nutrients to develop large blooms.

After the plants have been harvested, the soil should be replenished. Organic matter and fertilizer can prepare the soil for the next year. This is important for those who grow sunflowers every year in gardens.

Sunflowers are a joy. They can be very exciting as well. From when you plant the first seed to harvesting and roasting the seeds, the whole experience is a great summer project. Because sunflowers grow so fast you can actually "see" them grow. I find that kids love to plant sunflowers. Last summer I bought seeds for my 6 year old niece and 4 year old nephew. They had a blast! We planted them and everyday after that they wanted to go check on their flowers. The excitement when they sprouted was fun but then when the flowers were taller then them they couldn't stop talking about the sunflowers that they had grown. We are still enjoying all the yummy seeds we harvested!

Growing Orchids

The orchid is a popular flowering plant that has an exotic appeal. Its unique petal appearance gives it a sense of drama and mystery. Many choose to grow these at home to enjoy the delicate blooms. Orchids are often thought of as being quite difficult to care for. While they do require some special care, these steps are often easy. Following a few simple tips can make it easier to get fresh blooms.

Humidity-
Humidity is very important to orchids, and it must be controlled. Controlling the humidity controls the moisture the plant receives. Without it, the plant may not perform well, or it may begin to die.

There are two primary ways to control the humidity in the home. The first of these is to get and use a humidifier in the growing room. This will begin to create a more humid atmosphere for it to grow in.

For those who want a more simple option, a gravel tray can be used. A gravel tray will create enough humidity for only the orchid plant. This is an ideal solution when there is only one plant in the room.

To create this tray, a water drip tray should be placed under the pot. Small and medium pebbles should be added to the tray in a thin layer. Water should be added to just below the surface of the pebbles.

Water-

Just as humidity is important, so is the amount of water delivered. Misting is the recommended watering method for many types of orchids. This can help prevent over watering and damage to leaves and petals.

A mister should be used to spray the gravel tray and under leaves. This should be done gently as needed to avoid root saturation. Misting helps to provide a more natural environment for the plant.

Temperature-

For orchids grown indoors, temperature must be carefully controlled. Some species may have specific needs for day and night temperature. However, many have an average temperature need that can be followed.

During the day, average household temperatures are often enough. For many homes this is often between 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. At night, temperatures should not go below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cooler temps may be ideal to give it time to go into a resting period. A resting period often occurs in late fall or during the winter. Lighter watering should be used to prevent plants from shriveling.

Light-

Direct and harsh sunlight should be avoided for many of the species. This is true for growing many of the indoor and outdoor varieties. Bright indirect light is often the best lighting for growing plants.

Many species prefer up to 12 hours of filtered light per day to grow. To do this indoors a screen can be added to the window to block light. Another possibility is setting the pot near a well lit windowsill.

Fertilizer-

One way to encourage better blooms is to add a fertilizer to soil. These additives are often added to the water when misting the plant. Others may be mixed in with the potting soil medium if necessary.

The use of fertilizers and food should be limited to avoid over use. Too much use can lead to damaged leaves or reduced bloom quality. For this reason many choose to only lightly feed their orchid.

On July 4th the United States of America will celebrate it's 235th Birthday! On this day in 1776 the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, starting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a Sovereign nation. This holiday is celebrated with parades, fireworks, and barbecues around country.

Fun facts about the Fourth maybe you didn't know....

John Hancock was the only one of the 56 signers of the Declaration to sign on July 4th, 1776. The others signed on August 2nd, 1776.

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the National animal but was out voted when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the Bald Eagle.

Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776.

The stars on the Original American flag were arranged in a circle to ensure that all colonies were equal. There were thirteen of them to represent the thirteen colonies.

Uncle Sam was actually Samuel Wilson, a meat packer who provided meat to the U.S. Army in 1812. The meat shipments were stamped U.S. Someone joked that the initials stood for " Uncle Sam." The joke eventually led to the idea of Uncle Sam symbolizing the U.S. Government.

The National Anthem is actually set to the tune of an old English drinking song called " To Anacreon in Heaven."

The words " Under God" were not added to the Pledge Of Allegiance until 1954.

The Fourth of July was not declared a National Holiday until the year 1941.

The first Fourth of July celebration was held at the White House in 1801.

The only U.S. President to be born on the Fourth of July was our thirteenth. Calvin Coolidge. He was born in 1872. Other famous people to celebrate their birthdays on the Fourth are author Nathaniel Hawthorne, Playwright Neil Simon and TV personality Geraldo Rivera.

John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe all died on the Fourth. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died in 1826 and James Monroe died in 1831.

In July 1776 the Nation's population was about 2.5 million. Today it is about 309.6 million.

Today is June 22nd. This is the first day of the Zodiac sign Cancer. Flower of the Week......Gerber Daisy

The Gerber Daisy is personally one of my favorite flowers. It is definitely one of the most cheerful and vibrant flowers available. They come in a range of colors from bright pink, snow white, sunny yellow to ruby red and many shades in between. These are just a few of the fabulous colors available. Sending Gerbers is the perfect way to brighten someone's day!
Gerber Daisies are the fifth most popular flower in the world behind Roses, Carnations, Chrysanthemums and Tulips. They stand for innocence, purity and cheerfulness. They look great in mixed arrangements but they can also make a beautiful, simple and elegant arrangement just on their own in a nice vase with some mixed greens.
Gerbers are distinguished by large flowering heads with multiple petals. They closely resemble sunflowers in size and shape. However they are much more delicate and are not as long lasting.
The scientific name is Gerbera Jamesonii after the man who first discovered them. They were discovered in 1884 in Barberton, South Africa by Scotsman Robert Jameson. Breeding programs began in 1890 in England to enhance the flowers quality and colors.
Gerbers also make great potted plants. They attract bees, butterflys, and birds as well as adding color and texture to any garden. This plant is very hardy and blooms repeatedly if given proper care. The flowers can grow anywhere from 6 to 18 inches tall! These plants require full sun and regular water but be careful not to overwater.

Today is Earth Day! Earth Day- April 22- marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. It's a great time to learn about our planet and how to take care of it!
One of the best ways to celebrate Earth Day is with Plants. Whether planting a Garden outside, building a terrarium to grow inside, or surrounding yourself with lush green plants in either home or office or both, Plants are not only calming and fun to grow but they benefit our Earth immensely. They produce oxygen. The oxygen we breathe comes from plants. It is necessary for people and animals to breathe to live.
Plants are the only organisms that can convert light energy from the sun into food. And plants produce ALL of the food that animals, including people, eat. Even meat. The animals that give us meat, such as chickens and cows, eat grass, oats, corn, or some other plants.
Plants are the primary habitat for thousands of other organisms. Animals live in, on, or under plants. Plants provide shelter and safety for animals from wind and other elements.
Plants also help make and preserve soil. The roots hold soil together and this helps prevent erosion. Plants also enrich soil with many nutrients, making Soil good for growing more plants.

Many plants are important sources of products that people use, including food, fibers (for cloth), and medicines. Plants also help provide some of our energy needs.
Plants also add beauty to the world. When we build houses and other buildings, we never think the job is done until we have planted trees, shrubs, and flowers to make what we have built much nicer.
This Earth Day Celebrate by adding a plant of your choice to your environment. There are so many types of green and blooming plants to choose from. Find something that you like and enjoy it. The Prom season is upon us here in Tucson. High school seniors are gearing up for one of the most exciting times of their young lives. There are many things to do from securing the date to shopping for dresses, tuxes, jewelry and shoes. Time to get your hair styled and your make-up just right for that fancy dance.
This time in a young person's life is filled with wonder as to what the future holds as well as nostalgia for what has already happened. Whether you are going on to college or starting out in the working world this is definitely one of your last great memories from high school.
This night is already so important so of course you want everything to be perfect. The perfect dress, the perfect shoes, the perfect hair and of course the perfect date. Another thing to consider is tradition. Prom is all about tradition. From pictures to curfew.....

One important tradition is the exchanging of boutonnieres and corsages. Flowers, for him and her, are a special way of showing your respect and consideration for your partner.
Customarily girls buy a boutonniere for their dates. Usually it is a pin-on carnation or rose with baby's breath to be worn traditionally on the right lapel. But these can also be made with orchids or other flowers if you want something extra special.
It is customary for the guy to buy a corsage for his date. It can be a pin-on type, or one she can wear around her wrist. Some even buy a modified nosegay that a girl can carry in her hand. It is a good idea to know what color dress your date is wearing so that the corsage you choose doesn't clash. Some couples like to go together and choose the flowers. You can also order a hairpiece for the girl's hair if you want something a little different.

April Fool's Day

April Fool's Day is one of the best times of the year! It is the beginning of Spring. At this time people are enjoying warmer weather, longer days and they are enjoying watching the garden grow and bloom. This time of year brings out the pranksters. Although the exact origin of April fool's day is unknown there are references in literature dating as far back as 1509.
Traditionally, in some countries such as New Zealand, the UK, Australia, and South Africa, the jokes only last until noon, and someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool."

Here are a couple of the more famous pranks in history....... These are my favorites.

The Left-Handed Whopper

1998: Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, "many others requested their own 'right handed' version."

UFO Lands in London

1989: On March 31, 1989 thousands of motorists driving on the highway outside London looked up in the air to see a glowing flying saucer descending on their city. Many of them pulled to the side of the road to watch the bizarre craft float through the air. The saucer finally landed in a field on the outskirts of London where local residents immediately called the police to warn them of an alien invasion. Soon the police arrived on the scene, and one brave officer approached the craft with his truncheon extended before him. When a door in the craft popped open, and a small, silver-suited figure emerged, the policeman ran in the opposite direction. The saucer turned out to be a hot-air balloon that had been specially built to look like a UFO by Richard Branson, the 36-year-old chairman of Virgin Records. The stunt combined his passion for ballooning with his love of pranks. His plan was to land the craft in London's Hyde Park on April 1. Unfortunately, the wind blew him off course, and he was forced to land a day early in the wrong location.

The Skyforest Orange-Bearing Pine Trees

1950: Motorists driving along the scenic Rim of the World highway near Lake Arrowhead in Southern California discovered that the pine and cedar trees lining the road had all grown oranges overnight. The transformation was the work of the residents of the nearby town of Skyforest, led by the cartoonist Frank Adams. They had crept out during the night and strung 50,000 oranges in the trees along a one-mile section of the highway. The fruit was left over from the recent National Orange Show in San Bernardino.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Top of the mornin' to ye!! St. Patrick's Day is an Irish holiday celebrated all over the world. It is to honor the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick.

Who was St. Patrick you ask?

Saint Patrick lived between 432 and 461 A.D. At the age of sixteen he was kidnapped from his native land of the Roman British Isles by band pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. He worked as a shepherd and turned to religion. After six years of slavery he escaped to the Irish coast and fled home to Britain.
While back in his homeland, he decided to become a priest. He then decided to return to Ireland after dreaming that the voices of the Irish people were calling him to convert them to Christianity.
He traveled back to Ireland as a christian missionary several years later. St. Patrick was able to bring upon a massive religious change to Christianity by converting people of power. He is credited with converting nobles, who set an example which people followed.
Patrick's mission in Ireland is said to have lasted thirty years. It is believed he died in 461
on March 17th.

The first year St. Patrick's Day was celebrated in America was 1737, in Boston, Massachusetts.
The first official St. Patty's Day parade was held in New York in 1766. Over 100 U.S. cities now hold St. Patrick's Day parades.

In Ireland people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrock's on their jackets or hats. Children wear orange, white and green badges. Women and young girls wear green ribbons in their hair.

Fun Facts about Clovers!

According to the Guinness book, the highest number of leaves found on one clover is fourteen!!

There are 10,000 regular three leaf clovers for every one lucky four leaf clovers. So if you find one consider yourself very lucky!!

Legend says that every leaf on a clover means something. The first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck!

Spring Time Bulbs

Spring is upon us here in the desert. The weather lately has been reminding me that for a short period of time Tucson has the perfect climate for a beautiful bulb garden. The cooler temps right before our hot summer make for some awesome gardens around here. But you have to hurry...
this weather won't last long. Here are some tips for growing your own blooming bulb garden.

The most common Spring Time bulbs are Daffodils, Tulips, Hyacinth, Freesia, and Anemone.

Daffodils-
The most Popular spring time bulb. These cheery bright yellow flowers are also the easiest to take care of! They require full sun or part shade and well drained soil. They can grow anywhere from 4 to 24 inches tall. Fresh cut Daffodils are great as a cheery reminder of spring when put in vases around your house.

Tulips-
Tulips are the spring bulb with the most variety. Few other early season plants offer the many sizes, shapes, and colors of tulips. This makes them the most versatile in finding the right tulip for your arrangement or garden. They require full sun and well drained soil. They grow anywhere from 4 to 36 inches tall!

Hyacinth-

Hyacinth's are the most sweet smelling bulb of spring. The intoxicating aroma the blooms produce is hard to beat. Hyacinth's also come in many colors. They offer shades of purple, blue, pink, red and white. They need full sun and well drained soil. Hyacinths can grow up to a foot tall.

Freesia-
Finicky, fragrant, and fabulous, warm-season gardeners love freesias for their beautiful blooms. Freesias grow well in containers. Like a lot of other bulbs they need full sun and well drained soil. They can be one of the trickier bulbs to take care of but if you can get them to grow they are so worth it. They can grow to be 24 inches tall.

Anemone-
Graceful and charming little bulbs, anemones look like little spring daisies, popping up from the foliage. They bloom in springy shades of pink, white and blue-and tuck well into virtually every garden. They need full sun and well drained soil and can grow to 6 inches tall.

These bulbs are the most common and available to plant. However there are many, many types of spring time bulbs! Check out your local nursery for the best plants for the desert. Make your garden a beautiful mix of these wonderful plants.

3. The red rose, the ultimate symbol of love, is said to have been created out of the lifeless body of a nymph by Chloris, the greek goddess of flowers.
One popular origin myth of Valentine's Day is the imprisonment of a christian, named Valentine, who was compassionate towards children. When Valentine refused to worship the Roman gods, he was thrown in jail. Children from all over wrote endearing messages and tossed them to Valentine through the bars of his cell window. He later became St. Valentine.

4. Giving candy on Valentine's Day became popular in the late 19th century when sugarcane cultivation spread worldwide.

Christmas is over and now it's time to celebrate the New Year! I can't believe it is already 2011! Where does the time go....

New Year's is the time of the year for parties, friends and family. If you are hosting a party this year, make it as festive as possible with New Years arrangements. You can liven up each area where you will be entertaining with a stunning arrangement. Your guests will love it and they will be sure to compliment your great taste.

There are a lot of things you can do for New Year's.
Colorful arrangements in large vases make a festive statement. If they will be placed by a wall ask for one-sided and tall. This way all the flowers in your arrangement will be visible. Choose a bold and unique flower as your focal and arrange your other flowers around to accentuate it.
If your arrangement is going to be placed in the middle of the room or in a place where people can walk around it, Go for an all-around arrangement that can be enjoyed from all sides. This should be tall and full as to "wow" your guests!
Think about the container your arrangement will be in. While glass vases are nice and there are many styles and colors to choose from, you can also put your arrangement in a nice ceramic container. We have many styles and colors to choose from as well.

Poinsettia facts and care

It is that time of year again! This December as you decorate for Christmas you are probably considering placing beautiful poinsettias around your home. They are so vivid and festive and they make you feel like it's Christmas. For those reasons they are the perfect Christmas decor.

But are they safe for children and animals? And how do you take care of them so that they stay lovely thru Christmas.
Here is Some Poinsettia 101....

Are Poinsettia's Toxic?

For years poinsettias had the bad reputation of being poisonous. While they are not meant to be eaten by humans, pets or livestock, ingesting poinsettias would probably cause some stomach upset, as would eating most any houseplant. However poinsettias have undergone extensive testing and there is no evidence that they are toxic or unsafe to have in the house. They are also safe to put into the compost.

A more likely problem to watch out for is contact dermatitis. Euphorbias exude a milky sap when broken. (Think of milkweed.) Some people are sensitive to this sap, which can cause an itchy rash. Be especially careful not to rub your eyes after touching the plants.

Poinsettia Care

Poinsettias can be very tricky but it is not impossible to hold on to your plant and enjoy it again next year. Here are some helpful tips on getting your plant to last.

Light- Place near a south, east, or west window. Poinsettias are tropical so they appreciate as much direct light as possible.

Heat- To keep it blooming as long as possible the temperature where you have it should be 65-75 during the day. 60 degrees at night is okay. However, cold drafts or allowing the leaves to touch a window can injure the leaves and cause premature leaf drop. Poinsettias that have sparse stems have probably been exposed to the wrong temperatures.

Water- Water the plant when the soil is dry to the touch. Water until it drains out the bottom. Never let the plant sit in water!! Check the moisture daily to make sure the plant is not completely dry. If your plant gets to dry it will wilt and this will damage your plant. It may take another season to improve after becoming to dry.

Humidity- Because the desert is dry and winter can also be a dry climate if your plant is in direct light you will most likely have to water it frequently. Maybe even everyday. But remember not to water if already wet.

Poinsettia care throughout the year

January- March-

Water plant when dry on the surface as you did when you first got it.

April-

Decrease watering and move it to a cool spot like the basement or garage.

May-

Cut back the stems to about 4 inches and repot in a slightly larger container with drainage. Place it back in a bright window and resume watering when dry to touch. When new growth appears begin fertilizing every two weeks.

June-

Move your poinsettia outside to a partially shaded location. Maintain watering and fertilizing.

July-

Pinch stems back an inch to encourage a well branched plant. Branched plants are healthier and stronger.

August-

Once again pinch the stems leaving 3-4 leaves on each stem. Bring the plant back inside to the bright window. Continue watering and fertilizing as you have been.

September-

Continue watering and fertilizing.

October-

On the first of October start keeping your plant in total darkness from 5pm to 8am. Any exposure to light will delay blooming. Many people keep them in closets but you want to make sure that all the cracks are sealed and you do not open the door between 5pm and 8am. Make sure the plant gets NO LIGHT at this time. During the day you will want to move your plant to a sunny area.

November-

Around the last week in November you can stop the darkness treatment. Allow the plant to remain in the window. Maintain watering and fertilizing as you have been.

December-

Stop fertilizing Dec. 15th. Keep the watering schedule that you are on. If all has gone well your plant should be reblooming for Christmas!

So even though there is a lot to it, if you keep up with the care you should be able to enjoy your Poinsettia year after year.

Sean Coleman Annual Blood Drive a Success!

Thank you to everyone who came out and donated blood on Sat. Nov. 27th! The annual Sean Coleman blood drive was held Sat. Nov.27th at the Mayfield location at Tanque Verde and Sabino Canyon Rd.
This year more then 70 people showed up to donate a pint of their blood for the cause.
This is a great turnout and will help save lives.

Every year Don Coleman teams up with the American Red Cross to hold the drive in honor of his son Sean, 15, who at the age of 4 months received a life saving blood transfusion after a heart transplant. The blood drive is the Coleman's way of saying thank you to the community. This is the eighth year that the blood drive has happened.

Each person that donated received a free dozen roses. Donors had the choice to keep their roses or to donate them to either TMC Peppi's house or the Diamond Children's Center at UMC.

Sean Coleman annual blood drive

Mayfield Florist and the American Red Cross are teaming up again to help save lives! The Annual Sean Coleman blood drive is happening on Nov. 27th from 9am to 2pm at 7181 E Tanque Verde Rd in Tucson. Come out and donate blood! This is a great way to help out and give back!
Since 2003, Don Coleman has been working with the American Red Cross to hold the Blood Drive. It is in Honor of his son Sean Coleman whose life was saved by a blood transfusion following a heart transplant when he was four months old. Don, who is co-owner of Mayfield, schedules the blood drive around the anniversary of his son's successful operation.
Each donor will receive a dozen Free roses. They will have the option to "Pay it Forward" and donate their roses to either Peppi's House (TMC Hospice) or the Diamond Children's Medical Center.

Receiving flower arrangements from friends or loved ones is an awesome experience. As well as just buying a beautiful arrangement for yourself to decorate your house. But other times you may want to buy loose flowers and experiment on your own. You can make your own gorgeous arrangements to fit your taste and style. This is not only fun but can brighten up any space you want. Flower arrangements look nice on the coffee table, dining room table, kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms.

Here are a few tips that will help when arranging your own flower bouquets.

1. Choose a container that is about half the height of your stems. This way your flowers will be balanced in the vase and look proportioned.

2. Be adventurous with containers. Simple clear vases are nice, but you can also use things like pitchers, ceramic jugs, baskets, colored glass vases, as well as whatever else comes to mind. If it can hold water it can make an interesting floral arrangement.

3. Let your container act as a backdrop to your bouquet. You want your flowers to be the focal point and stars of the show.

4. Cut the stems to varying lengths. This way they will not all look the same and one flower will not block another. You will be able to see each flower in the arrangement.

5. Create a focal point for your bouquet. By putting the largest and brightest flowers in the center and working outward you draw attention to them. Add lighter and smaller flowers as you go.

6. Bunch round flowers in groups of two or three. They will have much more of an impact this way.

7. Add a few tall, straight flowers. This will give height to your arrangement. Mixing tall, short, skinny, and wider flowers to one arrangement will make the bouquet more interesting.

8. Fill in the spaces with greens. This will help your flowers to stay in place and the arrangement will look much fuller.

9. Perfection is imperfection. Flowers are like people. They have more character and flair when every hair isn't in place.

10. Don't go by the book. Have fun. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece. Just put together something that pleases you.

Receiving flowers from someone is a special feeling. Whether they come from your loved one, your family, friends or a co-worker it is exciting to receive flowers. The whole experience of it from when the delivery driver drops them off to when they finally die is a feeling you want to last. There are many helpful tips you should use to keep your flowers beautiful as long as possible.

1. They should be in a container or vase that gives them room to breathe. Just like people flowers need space. Nobody likes walking around in shoes that are two sizes to small. Use a vase that gives your flowers just enough room, but not too much room either.

2. Make sure the container or vase is clean. A clean container and clear water will help your flowers look and feel their best. It is best to change the water in the vase once a day.

3. Cut about an inch off the stems, and re-cut every few days. Air pockets form in the stems at the bottom and the flowers are unable to drink. Cutting them every other day will re-open the stems and then they are able to drink again.

4. Cut the stems under water to prevent air bubbles from sealing off the openings. It only takes seconds for a stem to seal from air pockets. cutting them under water is the best way to keep this from happening.

5. Use a sharp tool when cutting stems. A sharp knife works best but you can also use a sharp pair of pruners or if you must a sharp pair of scissors works too. Cut the stems at an angle to give them the best ability to drink the water. Don't use a dull cutting utensil. This will damage the stems.

6. Feed your flowers. Flowers need food just like us! Fasting is bad for their health. Fill the container or vase with warm water, and add commercial flower food. You should add the food every time you change the water. This will prolong the life of your flowers.

7. Remove leaves that would otherwise be submerged in the vase water. This is a good way to keep your water clean and fresh. Only the stems should be in water. Leaves have pores and when under water they drown. This causes dirty and smelly water.

8. Place your flowers in a spot that's not too hot, cold, or drafty. Flowers do not like extreme temperatures. They can't run for shade or put on a jacket so it's up to you to keep them comfortable. Think about where you would want to be. 75 to 80 degrees is perfect.

9. Keep flowers fresh. Again it is very important to the longevity of your arrangement to remove leaves and petals that look old and keep the water clean and clear.

10. Remove flowers that begin to fade. This will keep the flowers that are still bright from fading to quickly. If only a few blossoms remain, transfer them to a smaller vase or add a couple fresh stems to the bunch.

There are soooo many wonderful reasons to send flowers. Birthdays, Anniversaries, Get well Wishes, Funerals, Congratulations, Etc. Etc.... and while these are all good reasons and should not be neglected or ignored there are also reasons that don't always come to mind and would surprise and delight anyone. Flowers are always best when not expected. The element of surprise is a huge factor when sending to a loved one, friend, or co-worker.

Here are some great reasons I've thought of to send flowers.

1. It's a beautiful day. Send yourself or a loved one beautiful flowers to go with the day.

2. You have a blind date. For guys this is a great opportunity to be memorable and score big points. For girls buying yourself a cheerful bouquet of flowers is a great way to get in a cheerful, optimistic mood for your date.

3. Your favorite relative tells you they are having a bad day. Send them flowers and I guarantee they will forget, at least for a while, whatever is ruining their day. They will also know that they are loved which would make anyone feel better.

4. You are having dinner guests. Brighten up your home with colorful flowers. You should also buy a gorgeous centerpiece for the table. This will be enjoyable for your guests and make you look like the ultimate sophisticated host.

5. It's Wednesday. Get over the hump day blues by sending flowers to the office. These will last for the rest of the week and everyone will enjoy them as they are working. It makes the week go by just a little bit faster. (This works on Monday and Tuesday as well as Thursday and Friday, too.)

Flower of the Week.... Ginger

Ginger is one of the most colorful and beautiful tropical flowers in the world. The plant is native to Malaysia and is widely grown in tropical hot countries. It also flourishes in Hawaii, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. It is shipped all over the United States from mainly these locations. The most expensive and highest quality comes from Australia.

Ginger is unique because of it's elegance in form, texture, and vibrant color. The flower is absolutely striking in tropical flower arrangements. The long glossy leaves add a beautiful backdrop to any display and last quite a long time. As long as 3 weeks or more if they are not placed in direct sunlight. The Bracts are sometimes mistaken for the flower but the flowers are actually small and colorful and appear in between the bracts when in full bloom.

The plant is popularly known as a spice and the flower is a popular tropical. The Bracts are used during festivities on many islands in the South Pacific. The vibrant color of the Bracts make beautiful leis worn by royalty during important ceremonies.

There are many types of ginger including but not limited to Beehive ginger which has a yellow shade. The most popular and well recognized is torch ginger which is the long red flower that you see in many high style flower arrangements. Ginger leaves are usually green but there is a variegated type that is green and white with shades of purple in them. Ginger can even grow berries under the right conditions.

Other uses for ginger include...
The aromatic oils harvested from the plant are used in making condiments, perfumes, and medicines, especially stimulants and stomach medicines. They can be used in aroma therapy as well.
Ginger is used for treating many ailments including colds and coughs, headaches, colon and stomach upsets, morning and motion sickness, constipation, nausea, indigestion, and sinus congestion.

Ginger care...
If you have been so lucky to receive a stunning ginger flower arrangement or if you are growing them here are some helpful tips.
Ginger prefers bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. Never put them in the full sun as this will burn their leaves and flowers.
During the growing season they need to be kept moist but never let them sit in water unless of course they are freshly cut. Letting the plant sit in water will cause root rot.
They prefer moderate to high humidity. Best place is a kitchen or bathroom. If planted outside you can create humidity by placing them near other plants and watering at least every other day.
The plant prefers warm temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

The scientific name for ginger is Zingiber. This means " horn- shaped."

Remember the ginger flower when sending someone you love flowers. It makes a beautiful and unique statement. It is sure to be a hit with anyone!

Facts about the Fourth of July

On July 4th the United States of America will celebrate it's 234th Birthday! On this day in 1776 the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, starting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a Sovereign nation. This holiday is celebrated with parades, fireworks, and barbecues around country.

Fun facts about the Fourth maybe you didn't know....

John Hancock was the only one of the 56 signers of the Declaration to sign on July 4th, 1776. The others signed on August 2nd, 1776.

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the National animal but was out voted when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the Bald Eagle.

Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776.

The stars on the Original American flag were arranged in a circle to ensure that all colonies were equal. There were thirteen of them to represent the thirteen colonies.

Uncle Sam was actually Samuel Wilson, a meat packer who provided meat to the U.S. Army in 1812. The meat shipments were stamped U.S. Someone joked that the initials stood for " Uncle Sam." The joke eventually led to the idea of Uncle Sam symbolizing the U.S. Government.

The National Anthem is actually set to the tune of an old English drinking song called " To Anacreon in Heaven."

The words " Under God" were not added to the Pledge Of Allegiance until 1954.

The Fourth of July was not declared a National Holiday until the year 1941.

The first Fourth of July celebration was held at the White House in 1801.

The only U.S. President to be born on the Fourth of July was our thirteenth. Calvin Coolidge. He was born in 1872. Other famous people to celebrate their birthdays on the Fourth are author Nathaniel Hawthorne, Playwright Neil Simon and Tv personality Geraldo Rivera.

John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe all died on the Fourth. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died in 1826 and James Monroe died in 1831.

In July 1776 the Nation's population was about 2.5 million. Today it is about 309.6 million.

74 million Americans took part in a BBQ on the Fourth last year. Traditionally Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Chicken, Ribs, Garden salads, Potato Salad, Chips and Watermelon are the most served foods on the Fourth.

Over 150 million Hot Dogs will be consumed on this day. That's one Hot Dog for every two people in the country.

Nearly 349 million dollars are used each year to import Flags, banners, decorations and emblems from China.

Almost 211 million dollars of fireworks are imported from China for the Fourth each year.

There are 30 places nationwide with the word " Liberty" in their name. Eleven places with the word " Independence", Five places with the word " Freedom", Thirty places with the word "Eagle" , Five places with the word " America" and one place with the word "Patriot".

Flower of the week.... Sunflower

To celebrate the beginning of summer we give you the sunflower...

Sunflowers are one of the most cheerful and bright flowers around. They are incredibly popular both in beautiful flower arrangements and in the garden. The head of the flower can vary in size up to 12 inches across. They can grow to be anywhere from 5 to 12 feet tall. This makes them one of the tallest flowers. The tallest sunflower ever recorded grew in Padua in the year 1567 and reached a whopping 40 feet tall!!

Sunflowers are usually yellow but, however they can also be orange, red, and maroon. There are also types that are two toned in color. These are usually red and yellow or maroon and yellow. The sunflower is typically a single flower on one long stem however, there are varieties such as the wild sunflower and the Mexican sunflower that have multiple flowers on one stem. These flowers are usually much smaller in size then the single Sunflower.

Sunflowers get their name because of how much they love and depend on the sun. The head of a Sunflower is always " looking " at the sun. It moves all day so that it is always pointing in the sun's direction. They need full sun to grow to their full height and for their flowers to produce hundreds of seeds.

Bromeliad

The Bromeliad is one of the number one plants in Landscaping and floral design. This is because of it's long lasting blooms and attractive foliage. Not to mention the different colors, shapes and sizes they are available in. They make stunning combinations in floral designs or indoor and outdoor garden settings. They are incredibly easy to take care of, Only needing a small amount of water every ten days. They are also incredibly hardy and the blooms last up two three months.

Bromeliads were first recorded in history 500 hundred years ago when Columbus introduced the pineapple to Spain upon returning from his second visit to the New World in 1493. He found it being cultivated by the Carib Indians in the West Indies.

It is a tropical plant. Most come from South America with the greatest number of species found in Brazil. However, They can be found in a wide variety of habitats from hot, dry deserts to moist rainforests to cool mountain regions.
Within the last 100 years Bromeliads have become more widely used as ornamental plants.
Originally found in Royal botanical gardens of wealthy Europeans their popularity has spread to the masses. They are quite the gift! People like that they are so brightly colored and unique.

Bromeliads have easy care. They will tolerate a wide range of lighting conditions including low light. Many species will tolerate temperatures over 100 degrees but, they do best in 70 to 75 degrees. They do best in humid conditions and fresh air but, they can survive beautifully inside even when the humidity is low. They do best when they are watered lightly only when soil is dry to touch. They have a small root system so if watered heavily their roots will rot quickly. They have "cups' at the base which is the absolute best place to water them. When replanting they do best in small pots with soil.

The flower of the week is Daffodils.
Daffodils are a true sign of spring. They are one of the happiest flowers around.
They have a trumpet shaped corona surrounded by a ring of floral petal leaves called the perianth. The most common color is bright yellow however, they do come in white as well.

The bulb of a daffodil can be toxic. The poison is called lycorine. It is harmful if swallowed. They can also cause dermatitus problems such as "Daffodil itch" which is dryness, fissures, and scaling on the hands.

Their are many myths surrounding Daffodils. Both the Greeks and the Egyptians related the flower with death. The Egyptians hung wreaths of Daffodils at funerals. In medievil Europe it was believed if a Daffodil drooped when you looked at it, it was an omen of death. The Arabians used this flower as an aphrodisiac.

The Daffodil is the National flower of Wales, because it blooms on March 1st. It is also the American Cancer society's symbol of hope that a cure will be found for cancer. They believe it symbolizes new hope and life.

Today Daffodils symbolize new beginnings and rebirth, They are a symbol of spring. In Wales it is said if you spot the first Daffodil of the season, your next 12 months will be filled with wealth and the chinese believe they bring good luck.

The March birth flower and the Tenth wedding anniversary flower, a gift of Daffodils is said to ensure happiness. Spring is here! Easter is coming. This is the time of year for many spring bulbs. Whether you are growing them in your garden or want a beautiful spring fresh cut bouquet of bulbs, these flowers are perfect for spring!

Here is some information on some of the more popular spring bulbs that are available at Mayfield Florist.

Hyacinthus

Hyacinths, which bear their waxy, trumpet-shaped flowers in clusters 6 to 10 inches high, bring winter-weary indoor gardeners one of the first sweet scents of spring. They come in many colors. The most popular are pink, purple and white.
When growing in the garden they do best with at least 4 hours day of direct sunlight, except during flowering, when they need partial shade. Keep soil moist while plants are growing, then dry after foliage matures. Save soil-grown bulbs for planting outdoors. Plants will usually bloom from December thru April.

Daffodils (Narcissus)

Daffodils are a cheerful spring time bulb. The flowers are trumpet-shaped and the most popular color is yellow. The cut flowers make beautiful arrangements or add brightness to mixed arrangements.
When growing Daffodils do best in bright indirect or filtered sunlight when blooming. They usually bloom during winter and spring. The dry bulbs should be set in any material that supports them, such as pebbles, sand, peat moss, or bulb fiber. Plant them shallowly, so that only the bases are covered. Keep the growing medium wet, do not fertilize. Set the bulbs in a cool dark place until new growth is about 4 inches high, then bring them out to bloom.

Tulips

Tulips are one of the most popular types of spring bulbs. Their colors range from white to cream, yellow, orange, pink, red, lavender and purple. There are also a couple different kinds of tulips. The dutch variety is the most common. Florists use them in many spring arrangements and their blooms are 1 to 3 inches tall. The french tulip has a much larger bloom. Almost any tulip can be grown as a potted plant.
They do best in bright indirect light or filtered sun. Keep the soil moist but do not fertilize. When done blooming cut the foliage and keep the bulbs dry until it's time to plant them in September.

Easter Lily

Easter lilies are famed for their snow white flowers and sweet smell. They are grown by the millions each year, timed to open their blossoms for the Easter season. The flowers are 6 to 8 inches long and 4 to 5 inches across. They bloom for about a week.

Groundhog Day

Groundhog day has been celebrated in Punxsutawney since 1886.

Punxsutawney Phil has been making predictions for over 120 years and according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, there has only been one groundhog since the beginning. His predictions are never wrong! His longevity from drinking an "elixir of life" every summer at the Groundhog Picnic which magically gives him seven more years of life.

On February 2, Phil comes out of his burrow to predict the weather for the rest of winter. According to legend, if he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he doesn't, there will be an early spring.

The proclamation is told by Phil to the current president of the Inner Circle of the Groundhog Club.They speak in "Groundhogese" which is only understood by the two of them. The president then translates the prediction for the rest of the world.

The celebration of Groundhog Day began with Pennsylvania's earliest settlers. They brought with them the legend of Candlemas Day, which states, "For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day, so far will the snow swirl in May..."

Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the 1800s. The first official trek to Gobbler's Knob was made on February 2, 1887.

So the story goes, Punxsutawney Phil was named after King Phillip. Prior to being called Phil, he was called Br'er Groundhog.
